1981-82 NHL Season

The 1981-82 National Hockey League season was the 65th in the league’s history with each of the 21 teams playing an 80 game regular season schedule. The New York Islanders dominated the regular season, finishing first overall with 54 wins and 118 points.

The up and coming Edmonton Oilers finished second overall with 48 wins and 111 points. However, the Oilers were bounced in the opening round of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Kings. L.A. finished 48 behind Edmonton and would not have qualified for the post season in any other division but the Smythe.

Wayne Gretzky of the Oilers set the current mark for most goals scored in a single season with 92. He also became the first player in NHL history to top the 200 point plateau with 212. He remains the only player to accomplish this feat.

The New York Islanders cruised to their third of four consecutive Stanley Cup championships. After tough battles with the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers in the opening two rounds, the Isles swept the Quebec Nordiques in the semi-final and the Vancouver Canucks in the final. Mike Bossy was named the recipient of the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

During the regular season, it was Gretzky taking home the Art Ross Trophy as top scorer and the Hart Trophy as most valuable player. Dale Hawerchuk of the Winnipeg Jets was awarded the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Hawerchuk put up an impressive 45 goals and 58 assists for 103 points during the regular season. In four playoff games, he contributed eight points in a losing cause for the Jets.

Along with Hawerchuk, other greats made their debut in 1981-82, including Al MacInnis, Bernie Nicholls, Grant Fuhr and Ron Francis. Players appearing in their final NHL games include Rogatien Vachon, Dave Keon, Rick Martin, Steve Vickers and Gregg Sheppard.
