29 times in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks, a player has scored four goals in a game. Just one player has scored five and that was Grant Mulvey during the 1981-82 NHL season. He made franchise history on the night of February 3, 1982 in a home game against the St. Louis Blues at the Chicago Stadium.
In a high scoring affair that saw the Blackhawks come out on top 9-5, Mulvey scored the final three goals of the first period for a natural hat trick. He also started the scoring off with the first goal of the game. This performance alone puts him in the NHL record books for most goals in a period, tied with 17 others.
In that first period, he also assisted on a goal by Doug Wilson. The five point period ties him with 21 others for most points in a period, a single point behind record holders Bryan Trottier of the New York Islanders and Mika Zibanejad of the New York Rangers.
Grant added a second period assist on an Al Secord goal and scored his fifth of the game in the third period for a seven point night. This total ties him with Max Bentley for the franchise record for most points in a game. To hold these records on a team that has seen the likes of Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Denis Savard and even Patrick Kane is pretty remarkable. Four of the goals that night were scored on Mike Liut while the fifth was scored on Gary Edwards.
That was definitely the swansong of Mulvey’s NHL career. After scoring 30 goals in 1981-82 for the Hawks, Grant would play 15 more games in the NHL over the following two years before calling it a career.
Between 1974-75 and 1983-84, Grant Mulvey appeared in 586 regular season and 42 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Blackhawks and New Jersey Devils. Originally, he was a 16th overall pick by Chicago at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft after just a single year of major junior in the WHL with the Calgary Centennials.
