The Nordiques 5th-leading scorer in 1980-81, Michel was credited with 3 power play goals, 2 short handed goals, 3 game winning goals and 2 game tying goals during campaign. A natural athlete in top physical condition. Michel’s last amateur club was the Quebec Remparts of the QJHL in 1977-78.

Steady improvement was the name of the game for Michel Goulet. In his third NHL season, 1981-82, his numbers improved to 42 goals and 42 assists for 84 points. He also led the Quebec Nordiques into the post season for a long run. The team finished fourth in the Adams Division but upset the first place Montreal Canadiens in the opening round. After eliminating the Boston Bruins in the next round, Quebec was swept in the semi-final by the New York Islanders.
In 1981-82, three of his 42 goals came on the night of December 29, 1981. The Nordiques were hosting the Chicago Blackhawks at the Colisée and rudely beat up on their guests 8-1. Goulet scored his 18th, 19th and 20th goals of the season. Peter Stastny had a five point night for the Nordiques with two goals and three assists while his brother Marian completed the Gordie Howe Hat Trick with a goal, assist and third period fight with Al Secord.
Michel was a first round pick by the Nordiques at the 1979 NHL Entry Draft after playing a year in the WHA with the Birmingham Bulls. Previous to that, he played two years with the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL where he scored 73 goals in 72 games during the 1977-78 season.
Between 1979-80 and 1993-94, Michel Goulet appeared in 1,089 regular season and 92 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Quebec Nordiques and Chicago Blackhawks. He was a 50 goal scorer in four consecutive seasons and topped out with 57 in 1982-83. Goulet was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998.
