Details

An obscure NHL record but Clark Gillies still holds it. In the 1976-77 playoffs, he scored four consecutive game winning goals for the New York Islanders. The streak started in the second game of the best of five opening round sweep against the Chicago Blackhawks. Midway through the game, Gillies scored the second goal for the Islanders in a 2-1 series clinching win.

The Islanders met the Buffalo Sabres in the second round, another sweep, this time in four games. Clark scored the winning goal in each of the first three games of the series. In the fourth game, the game winner was put in by Billy MacMillan. Interestingly, those were the only four goals Gillies scored in the 76-77 playoffs over 12 games.

Gillies finished his career with just the two All-Star Team selections mentioned on the back of this 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee hockey card. He was named to the First Team in consecutive seasons, 1977-78 and 1978-79. In the first year, Steve Shutt was the Second Team left winger behind Gillies and Bill Barber took the runner-up role in 1978-79.

Clark spent three seasons with the Regina Pats from 1971-72 to 1973-74. In his final season, he tied for tenth in scoring with 112 points. In a twist of fate, the player he tied with was future Islanders linemate Bryan Trottier of the Swift Current Broncos. The performance caught the eye of the Islanders and he was selected fourth overall at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft, behind just Greg Joly, Wilf Paiement and Rick Hampton.

Between 1974-75 and 1987-88, Clark Gillies played in 958 regular season and 164 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Islanders and Buffalo Sabres. The four time Stanley Cup champion had his number 9 retired by New York in 1996. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.
