Details
The thing that stands out to me the most about this 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee Dave Williams hockey card is the fact he’s been designated as a defenseman on both the front and back of the card. Tiger Williams was not a blue liner and spent his entire NHL career at left wing. This card has not been noted as an uncorrected error card because of that but maybe it should be. After all, the 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee Guy Lafleur card is considered an error for the exact same reason.
Tiger was only halfway done after the 1980-81 season, as far as penalty minutes go. He would end his career with a whopping 3,966 PIM. That total leaves him alone at the top on the all-time NHL career penalty minute list.
His 35 goals and 345 penalty minutes in 1980-81 with the Vancouver Canucks made him the first to score 30+ and sit 300+. Since, just Al Secord of the Chicago Blackhawks has been able to accomplish this rare feat with 44 goals and 303 PIM in 1981-82.
Dave’s rare ability to score goals and rack of minutes in the box started in junior with the Swift Current Broncos. In 1972-73, he scored 44 goals while sitting 266 PIM. The following year, he scored 52 and sat 310.
Dave Williams played 962 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1974-75 and 1987-88 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Hartford Whalers.
