Details

In 1971-72, with the Boston Braves in the American Hockey League, Dan Bouchard shared the Harry “Hap” Holmes Award with fellow Boston Bruins prospect Ross Brooks. Bouchard appeared in 50 games for the Braves, posting a 2.51 goals against average with four shutouts. Brooks played in 30 games, putting up a 2.38 GAA and one shutout. Interestingly, Ross would see time with the NHL Bruins while Dan never played for the club.

Bouchard was a second round pick by Boston at the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. He then became the third overall pick at the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft and the second player picked by the Atlanta Flames behind fellow goaltender Phil Myre. Dan backed up Myre in Atlanta’s first season but soon took over the number one role. In 1972-73, he appeared in 34 games for the Flames and was fifth in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.

Although Myre was between the pipes for Atlanta’s first ever shutout, Bouchard recorded his first shortly after. On December 13, 1972, he was in net against the Detroit Red Wings, stopping all 46 shots put his way. Curt Bennett did all the scoring in the 2-0 win with Billy MacMillan and Keith McCreary assisting on both.

Dan came to the Quebec Nordiques in a January 29, 1981 trade with the Calgary Flames that saw Jamie Hislop go the other direction. He became Quebec’s number one goalie through to the end of the 1983-84 season.

Between 1972-73 and 1985-86, Dan Bouchard appeared in 655 regular season and 43 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Atlanta Flames, Calgary Flames, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets. He finished his NHL career with 27 shutouts in the regular season and just one in the playoffs.
