Details

In the 1980-81 Stanley Cup playoffs, Butch Goring had ten goals and ten assists for 20 points in 18 games for the New York Islanders. His major offensive impact came in games three and five of the final series with the Minnesota North Stars.

In game three, Goring’s hat trick helped the Islanders to a 7-5 victory which pushed the series to 3-0. After a game four loss, Butch scored two goals in the first period of game five to lead the Islanders to a 5-1 win at home. This was the deciding game that gave New York it’s second of four consecutive Stanley Cup championships.

Butch came to the Islanders via a trade with the Los Angeles Kings on March 10, 1980, in exchange for Billy Harris and Dave Lewis. He played 81 games in 1979-80 (a standard 80 game schedule was in place for each team) but just 12 with New York. In the post season, he appeared in 21 games, contributing 19 points as the team won their first ever championship.

Goring played 1,107 regular season and 134 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1969-70 and 1984-85 with the Kings, Islanders and Boston Bruins.
