Details
ERROR? The whole part about Denis Savard holding the QMJHL record with 112 assists is not true and confusing at best. Savard did lead the Q with 112 assists in 1978-79 but it certainly wasn’t even close to a league record. In fact, he topped that mark in 1979-80 with 118 assists, a total that was only good for second in the league.
In fact, the 118 assist season is just the 12th best in league history with four of the eleven above him coming before 1978-79. The actual record is a whopping 157 by Pierre Larouche during the 1973-74 season.
Savard’s 75 points in 1980-81 was certainly a Chicago Blackhawks rookie record at the time. That mark was eclipsed just two years later by Steve Larmer. Larmer’s 90 points in 1982-83 remains a team record.
Denis Savard would go on to play 1,196 regular season and 169 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1980-81 and 1996-97 with the Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning. He surpassed the 100 point plateau in five seasons. His best year offensively came in 1987-88 when he totaled 131 points, finishing third in the race for the Art Ross Trophy behind Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky. Savard was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000.
