Those 72 assists in 1980-81 placed Bryan Trottier in the fifth spot in the NHL, 37 behind leader Wayne Gretzky and just one behind fourth place Bernie Federko. He would improve on that total in 1981-82 with 79, again placing him fifth in the league. Trottier’s career best for helpers came in 1978-79 with 87, good for first in the NHL with a ten assist cushion over runner-up Guy Lafleur.

In 1981-82, Trottier had a trio of five-point games. One was a five goal game against the Philadelphia Flyers and another had Bryan in on all of New York’s five goals in a 5-4 win over those same Flyers. That game was played at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on January 7, 1982. With the Islanders trailing 4-2 in the third period, Trottier sparked a comeback with a pair of goals followed by an assist on the game winner by Clark Gillies.

Bryan’s five goal game came in a home 8-2 win over the Flyers. Trottier needed just five shots on Pete Peeters to accomplish the feat. Mike Bossy, normally the sniper, went without a goal but had a five assist game.

Between 1975-76 and 1993-94, Bryan Trottier played 1,279 regular season and 221 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins. The 1978-79 Art Ross and Hart Trophy winner is a six-time Stanley Cup champion as a player, four times with the Islanders and twice with the Penguins. Trottier was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997.
