Details

Time in Detroit was coming to an end for Frank Mahovlich when this 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee hockey card came out. He would play just 35 games for the club that year before a January 13, 1971 trade sent him to the Montreal Canadiens for Mickey Redmond, Guy Charron and Bill Collins. He arrived in Montreal just in time to help them win a Stanley Cup title.

In Frank’s first game with the Habs, a road game in Minnesota the day after the trade, Mahovlich settled in well with new club, scoring the first goal of the game. At 16:59 of the first period, he scored his 15th goal of the 1970-71 NHL season on North Stars goalie Cesare Maniago. The game ended in a 3-3 draw.

Mahovlich led the Canadiens with 27 points over 20 playoff games that year. Montreal took out the Chicago Blackhawks in seven games to win the final series and the Stanley Cup. Frank was definitely a candidate for the Conn Smythe Trophy but that award instead went to goalie Ken Dryden.

Between 1956-57 and 1973-74, Frank Mahovlich appeared in 1,181 regular season and 137 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. The 1957-58 Calder Trophy winner was part of six Stanley Cup championship teams, four with Toronto and two with Montreal.

Mahovlich also played 237 regular season and nine playoff games in the WHA from 1974-75 to 1977-78 with the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls. Frank was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
