Details

When this 1977-78 O-Pee-Chee hockey card refers to Frank Mahovlich reaching 1,300 points, it is a combined total between the NHL and WHA. Over his career, The Big M totaled 1,103 points in the National Hockey League and 232 in the WHA for a grand total of 1,335.

Frank’s Stanley Cup ring count is six. He won the championship four times with the Maple Leafs and twice with the Habs. He led Montreal in 1970-71 with 14 goals and 27 points over 20 playoff games. If it weren’t for the outstanding performance by Ken Dryden, Mahovlich surely would have captured the Conn Smythe Trophy.

There was a lot of pressure on Mahovlich to perform in those 1970-71 playoffs. He came over from a trade with the Detroit Red Wings on January 13, 1971 and the Habs gave up some great young talent in Mickey Redmond and Guy Charron, along with Bill Collins in the deal.

1977-78 would be the finale of Frank’s career. He appeared in 72 games for the Birmingham Bulls, contributing 14 goals and 24 assists. It gave him the opportunity to play alongside fellow former Red Wing and Maple Leaf Paul Henderson.

Between 1956-57 and 1973-74, Frank Mahovlich appeared in 1,181 regular season and 137 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Red Wings and Canadiens. In the WHA, he played 237 regular season and nine playoff games between 1974-75 and 1977-78 with the Toronto Toros / Birmingham Bulls franchise. Frank was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
