Card Notes

Toronto once turned down $1 million which was offered for “The Big M”, and it was a smart move. The former rookie of the year in NHL was Leafs’ top star for over a decade. When he’s “on”, there’s none better.

Details

Back in 1962, it was the Chicago Blackhawks that offered $1,000,000 for Frank Mahovlich and the deal nearly went through. Mahovlich on the Hawks in the early 60’s would most likely have created a Stanley Cup dynasty in Chicago.

Mahovlich was awarded the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year in 1957-58. The voting was extremely tight between Frank and runner-up Bobby Hull with Phil Goyette, Marcel Paille and Bob Baun also in the mix. That year, Mahovlich scored 20 goals for the Leafs over 67 games.

Frank arrived in Detroit late in the 1967-68 NHL season after a March 3, 1968 trade. Carl Brewer, Pete Stemkowski and Garry Unger also went to the Red Wings while Doug Barrie, Paul Henderson, Floyd Smith and Norm Ullman went to Toronto.

In his first full season with the Wings, 1968-69, Mahovlich scored a career high 49 goals, tying Phil Esposito for second in the NHL, nine goals behind leader Bobby Hull. He had four hat tricks, including a four goal game against the Oakland Seals and a five point night (3 goals, 2 assists) against the Los Angeles Kings.

Between 1956-57 and 1973-74, Frank Mahovlich played 1,181 regular season and 137 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. He also appeared in 237 regular season and nine playoff games in the WHA between 1974-75 and 1977-78 with the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls.
