To say Pete Mahovlich hit his stride in 1970-71 is an understatement. Is 35 goals nearly doubled his previous career total. With the Detroit Red Wings, Mahovlich was used sparingly, spending much of his time in the minors. Prior to the 1969-70 NHL season, Peter was trade to the Montreal Canadiens with Bart Crashley for Garry Monahan and Doug Piper.
The catalyst to Montreal’s Stanley Cup championship run in 1970-71 was another trade with Detroit that brought Pete’s brother Frank Mahovlich into the fold on January 13, 1971 for for Guy Charron, Bill Collins and Mickey Redmond. The brothers Mahovlich combined for 24 goals and 46 points over 20 playoff games.
Pete recorded his first of three career hat tricks in a 5-3 home win over the Los Angeles Kings on February 25, 1971. He scored his 29th, 30th and 31st goals of the season on L.A. goalie Denis DeJordy. The hat trick goal served as the game winner. Brother Frank scored the fifth goal for the Habs into the empty net with 13 seconds left in the game.
Between 1965-66 and 1980-81, Pete Mahovlich played 884 regular season and 88 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a four time Stanley Cup champions with the Habs, also winning two AHL Calder Cups, one with the Pittsburgh Hornets and one with the Adirondack Red Wings.
