Details
Not an error but something perhaps in need of better interpretation. Prentice did not have 20 or more goals in eight of his last ten seasons. He did that just four times. But, if you take away his first two seasons with the Rangers when he scored a combined ten goals, his average over the next eight works out to just over 20 per season, powered by a 32 goal performance in 1959-60.
Dean Prentice did not reach the 200 goal plateau in 1962-63 and, midway through the season, was no longer a member of the New York Rangers. In February, 1963, he was traded to the Boston Bruins for Don McKenney. Over a combined 68 games between the two clubs, Prentice scored 19 goals.
Interestingly, his final game with the Rangers was in a 6-4 loss to the Bruins at Madison Square Garden. Dean had a goal and assist in the loss, putting his 13th of the season past Ed Johnston with help from Jim Neilson and Larry Cahan while also assisting on a Leon Rochefort goal.
After scoring a modest seven goals in his first 24 games with the Bruins in 1963-64, Dean reached that 200 goal plateau on December 12, 1964 at Boston Garden in a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Prentice scored the milestone goal at 7:49 of the first on Chicago goalie Glenn Hall, assisted by Orland Kurtenbach and Doug Mohns.
He would get back past the 20 goal mark in 1963-64, scoring 23 in 70 games for Boston. Over the remainder of his NHL career, Prentice topped 20 goals five more times for a career total of ten times.
Between 1952-53 and 1973-74, Dean Prentice played 1,378 regular season and 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars. He finished up his career just nine goals shy of 400.
