Card Notes

Formerly Boston’s regular goalie, Ed suffered a broke hand midway through the 1964-65 season which resulted in his sharing goaltending duties with Bernard Parent. This year with a much improved Boston defense, Ed is expected to develop into a top-flight NHL goalie.

Details

Ed Johnston returned as the number one goalie for the Boston Bruins in 1966-67, sharing duties with Bernie Parent and Gerry Cheevers. By the following year, Parent was taken in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, making Johnston and Cheevers the goaltending duo in Boston.

Already a somewhat “top-flight” goalie by the time this 1966-67 Topps hockey card came out, Johnston was fourth in voting for the Calder Trophy in 1962-63, in a close race that saw Kent Douglas beat Doug Barkley by a single vote. The following year Eddie got some consideration for the Hart Trophy after becoming the last NHL goalie to play every minute for his team. He finished a great distance behind winner Jean Beliveau.

1966-67 wasn’t quite the year that the new and improved Bruins took hold with Eddie winning just eight of the 34 games he appeared in. However, he started a string of winning records that lasted until he went to the St. Louis Blues for the 1974-75 NHL season.

Although he recorded no shutouts in 1966-67, Eddie had four one goal wins. He faced 30 or more shots in 16 of his 34 games, including four with 40 or more. In one of those, he was rocked for eleven goals in an 11-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens while facing 43 shots. Ralph Backstrom led the Habs with five points on two goals and three assists with five shots. Bobby Orr led all skaters with nine shots but was shut down by Rogie Vachon.

Between 1962-63 and 1977-78, Ed Johnston played 592 regular season and 18 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks. He recorded 32 career shutouts and was a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Bruins.
