Details

Long before he was the first ever team captain in the history of the Vancouver Canucks NHL franchise, Orland Kurtenbach was pretty successful with the WHL version of the Canucks. He was rookie of the year in 1957-58, contributing 54 points in 52 regular season games and helping Vancouver to a playoff championship, his first of two with the team.

He saw ten games with the New York Rangers in 1960-61 eight more with the Boston Bruins in 1961-62. However, Kurtenbach didn’t truly become a regular in the NHL until 1963-64 with Boston. He reached the 20 goal plateau twice during his NHL career but not until he was with the Canucks. He had a career best 24 goals in 1971-72.

Early in his 1963-64 NHL season with the Bruins, Kurtenbach had a big game against the New York Rangers on November 28, 1963 at Boston Garden. Orland had a goal and assisted on markers by Dean Prentice and Andy Hebenton for a three point game. His third goal of the season, scored unassisted on New York goalie Jacques Plante at 18:00 of the second period, held on as the game winner in a 5-3 victory.

Between 1960-61 and 1973-74, Orland Kurtenbach played 639 regular season and 19 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers, Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Canucks. As a head coach, he led the Tulsa Oilers to a CHL championship in 1975-76 while winning the Jake Milford as coach of the year. That team showcased future Calder Trophy winner Willi Plett.
