Steady is the word for Jim Neilson’s play. He seldom makes mistakes. He’s a fast skater, and has played forward on occasion. Jim is a good puck-carrier, and his size has made him very solid on defense.

For the second and last time over his long NHL career, Jim Neilson would not miss a regular season game for his team. Appearing in all 78 games for the New York Rangers, Neilson scored seven goals and assisted on 30 for 37 points, the second highest total of his career.

Neilson had a rare three point game on October 17, 1971 at Madison Square Garden against the Montreal Canadiens. The Rangers went into the third period with a 4-2 lead. In that third frame, the score doubled to 8-4. Jim assisted on three goals in that period, including the game winner scored by Vic Hadfield on Rogie Vachon 55 seconds in. He also had helpers on goals by Bruce MacGregor and Dave Balon.

Between 1962-63 and 1977-78, Jim Neilson played 1,023 regular season and 65 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, California Golden Seals and Cleveland Barons. He also played 35 games in the WHA with the Edmonton Oilers in 1978-79. Not a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Neilson was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
