Details

After playing 13 games with the Montreal Canadiens in 1968-69 as third man behind Gump Worsley and Rogie Vachon, Tony Esposito exploded onto the scene in 1969-70 with the Chicago Blackhawks. Thrust into the number one role with the Hawks, Esposito had a 2.17 goals against average and modern record 15 shutouts over 63 games.

Tony won the Calder with more votes than Bill Fairbairn, Keith Magnuson, Bobby Clarke and Butch Goring combined. Making his GAA even more impressive is that he allowed eleven goals over his first two games with Chicago, the first a 7-2 opening day loss to the St. Louis Blues. Esposito did face 43 shots in the game, including eight by Andre Boudrias.

1983-84 would be the final year in the NHL for Tony. He appeared in 18 games backing up Murray Bannerman and posted a dismal 4.84 GAA but did manage to add his 76th and final shutout. The blank was a 35 save 2-0 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins with Behn Wilson scoring both Chicago goals. To go with that however, he had two games allowing nine goals along with a 10-8 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Between 1968-69 and 1983-84, Tony Esposito played 886 regular season and 99 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens and Blackhawks. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988 and had his jersey number 35 retired by the Hawks the same year.
