Details

A fifth round pick by the Los Angeles Kings at the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft, Butch Goring became a regular and a key player with the Kings in 1971-72. Appearing in 74 games, Goring scored 21 goals and totaled 50 points, good for third on the team. He was handed a single minor penalty over the year but was not considered for the Lady Byng Trophy.

Despite his career 102 penalty minutes over 1,107 regular season games, Butch was a Lady Byng winner just once, in 1977-78 with Los Angeles. He had a full season without a penalty. In 1980-81 with the New York Islanders, Goring did not enter the penalty box over 78 games. Yet, he was a distant seventh in voting for the Byng that year, well behind winner Rick Kehoe of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

1971-72 was the start of a string of ten consecutive seasons scoring at least 21 goals. He had four straight between 1975-76 and 1978-79 where he reached the 30 goal plateau. His best campaign came in 1977-78 when Butch had 37 markers, leading the Kings with a one goal edge over Marcel Dionne.

Between 1971-72 and 1984-85, Butch Goring played in 1,107 regular season and 134 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, New York Islanders and Boston Bruins. The 1980-81 Conn Smythe Trophy winner helped the Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup championships.
