Details

For Keith Magnuson, 1977-78 turned out to be his NHL swansong for the most part. He appeared in 67 games for the Blackhawks, the most since he played 77 for the Hawks in 1972-73. The following year, he appeared in 26 and just three games in 1979-80 before calling it a career.

Known for his rugged style of play, Magnuson led the NHL with 213 penalty minutes in his rookie 1969-70 season. He finished with just one minute more than Carol Vadnais of the Oakland Seals. He led the league again in 1970-71 with 289 PIM, a whopping 72 more than second place Dennis Hextall of the California Golden Seals.

Between 1969-70 and 1979-80, Keith Magnuson appeared in 589 regular season and 68 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Chicago Blackhawks. He served as team captain for three seasons and had his number 3 retired by the Hawks in 2008.

Keith went on to become head coach in Chicago. In 1980-81, the team finished second in the Smythe Division and were swept in the opening round of the playoffs by the Calgary Flames. The following year, he was replaced by Bob Pulford 52 games into the season.
