Card Notes

Savvy is what Rod Seiling has got, and while he’s not the flashy type, he gets the job done… and well. A former member of the Canadian Olympic team, Rod is a fine puck carrier and has been used at forward on occasion. In 1967, Seiling was dealt from New York to St. Louis to New York in less than 1 hour!

Details

At the 1964 Winter Olympic Games, held in Innsbruck, Austria, Rod Seiling scored four goals and assisted on two for six points in seven games for Canada. The Canucks finished fourth while the Soviet Union took the gold, Sweden took silver and Czechoslovakia won bronze. At the time, Seiling was still a junior and spent most of the 1963-64 season with the Toronto Marlboros.

Although brought up through the Toronto Maple Leafs system, Rod was traded to the New York Rangers after playing just a single game for the Buds. On February 22, 1964, just weeks after arriving back from the Olympics, Seiling was dealt to the Rangers with Arnie Brown, Bill Collins, Dick Duff and Bob Nevin for Andy Bathgate and Don McKenney.

Rod jumped into a regular role with the weaker New York club and appeared in 68 of the team’s 70 games in 1964-65. Providing 26 points from the blue line, Seiling finished fourth in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. Roger Crozier won the award with Ron Ellis second and Denis DeJordy third.

Between 1962-63 and 1978-79, Rod Seiling appeared in 979 regular season and 77 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Rangers, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues and Atlanta Flames.
