Despite a broke ankle last year, Rod Gilbert had another outstanding season. In fact, the Rangers’ “Mr. Mod” has never had a bad year. “He’s what makes the Rangers tick,” says a rival GM.

It seems O-Pee-Chee jinxed Rod Gilbert for the 1969-70 NHL season by stating he’d never had a bad season. Rod’s numbers dropped to 16 goals and 37 assists for 53 points over 72 games. The last time he scored as few goals was in 1965-66 when he scored ten while playing just 34 games. Gilbert would bounce back, however, putting in a streak of six seasons with 30 or more goals starting in 1970-71.

However, Rod was on top of his game in the 1970 Stanley Cup playoffs with nine points in six games, all in the quarter-final series against the Boston Bruins. He was in on more than half of New York’s 16 goals in the series. Unfortunately, the Rangers were eliminated in six games.

Always a fan of shooting the puck, Gilbert had 12 shots on Detroit Red Wings goalie Roger Crozier in an April 5, 1970 game at Madison Square Garden. Two of those 12 got past Crozier, both in unique style. The first was scored 36 seconds into the game. The second was scored just 20 seconds into the second. The game also featured a Dave Balon hat trick and a four assist performance by Arnie Brown.

Between 1960-61 and 1977-78, Rod Gilbert played 1,065 regular season and 75 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Rangers. Gilbert was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
