Details
In that 1975-76 NHL season, Reg Leach scored 61 goals for the Philadelphia Flyers. He was the second to 50 in franchise history, following Rick MacLeish. However, he remains today as the only player in the history of the Flyers to reach the 60 goal plateau.
Leach’s 19 goals over 16 games in the 1976 Stanley Cup playoffs remains tied for the record. Jari Kurri equaled the mark in 1984-85 with the benefit of an additional two games. Despite the performance, the Flyers fell to the Montreal Canadiens in the final but Reggie was honoured in the losing cause with the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
Despite scoring 61 goals in 80 games, Leach had just a single hat trick in 1975-76. That came in a 7-2 home win over the Atlanta Flames on January 22, 1976, two scored on Phil Myre and one on Dan Bouchard. He did have 15 two goal games.
Throughout the 1976 playoffs, Reggie was consistent, scoring in all but three games. The semi-final series against the Boston Bruins saw him score nine goals in five games, capped by a five goal performance in the series clinching game 5. All five, including the game winner, were scored on Gilles Gilbert in the 6-3 win.
Originally picked third overall by the Boston Bruins at the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft, Reg Leach played 934 regular season and 94 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1970-71 and 1982-83 with the Bruins, California Golden Seals, Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings.
