Gilles will have to shoulder a lot of pressure this season as Boston’s top goalie. The Bruins traded Fred Stanfield for Gilles last spring. This year will mark Gilbert’s first full test in the NHL. Gilles scored 2 wins in his first 2 starts in the NHL.

There’s a slight ERROR on the back of this 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee hockey card. Gilles Gilbert started his first NHL game on February 8, 1970 for the Minnesota North Stars and he did not come out on the winning end. The Stars fell on the road to the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 at the Civic Arena. Gilbert faced 39 shots in his debut, the only game he would play during the 1969-70 NHL season.
In his first game of the 1970-71 season, Gilles was the main factor in Minnesota’s 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens at the Forum on October 21, 1970. Gilbert was bombarded with 47 shots but allowed just a first period goal by Guy Lapointe (assisted by Henri Richard and Yvan Cournoyer).
His next start came on October 28, 1970 in a showdown with Tony Esposito and the Chicago Blackhawks and Gilbert indeed came out with his second consecutive win of the season. He turned away 30 shots and allowed just a second period goal by Bryan Campbell (assisted by Chico Maki and Bobby Hull). The North Stars came out on top 2-1 on a third period goal by Buster Harvey.
Gilbert didn’t disappoint in 1973-74 after being thrust into the starting role with the Bruins. He appeared in 54 regular season games, posting a 2.95 goals against average with six shutouts. He then appeared in all of Boston’s 16 playoff games, helping the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup final before falling to the Philadelphia Flyers.
Between 1969-70 and 1982-83, Gilles Gilbert appeared in 416 regular season and 32 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the North Stars, Bruins and Detroit Red Wings. He finished his NHL career with 18 shutouts and a 3.27 GAA.
