Details
On May 24, 1974, Reg Leach was traded from the California Golden Seals to the Philadelphia Flyers for Al MacAdam and Larry Wright. In his first year with the Flyers, 1974-75, he nearly doubled his previous best goal production with 45. That total led the team and placed him seventh in the NHL, just a single goal behind sixth place Bobby Orr and two behind fifth place Marcel Dionne.
In that 1974-75 NHL season, Leach had three hat tricks, included a three goal performance against his old team. On March 26, 1975, he scored his 40th, 41st and 42nd of the season on Gary Simmons in a 6-2 road win over the Seals. Reg led with eight of the 40 shots put on Simmons in the game. Bobby Clarke assisted on all three and a single by Ross Lonsberry for a four point game.
Leach’s 87 goal season with the Flin Flon Bombers came in 1967-68 when he was teammed with Bobby Clarke. Over 59 games, the duo combined for 138 goals, 161 assists and 299 points. The following year, Reg played just 22 games due to injury but scored 36 goals. In his final season with Flin Flon and without Clarke, Leach still put up great numbers with 65 goals and 111 points.
The Boston Bruins made him the third overall pick at the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft behind just Gilbert Perreault (Buffalo) and Dale Tallon (Vancouver). On the talent-laden Bruins, Leach never got a fair shake and was traded to the Golden Seals midway through his second season.
Between 1970-71 and 1982-83, Reg Leach played 934 regular season and 94 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, California Golden Seals, Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings. The Stanley Cup champion in 1974-75 was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy the following year, despite losing in the Stanley Cup final.
