First, the trivia snippet: Marcel Dionne’s great 1974-75 NHL season has mostly stood the test of time. His 121 points place him fourth all-time on the club but behind just one other player. Steve Yzerman had three campaigns with more, including his franchise record 155 in 1988-89.
Reg Leach joined the Detroit Red Wings for his final season in the National Hockey League, 1982-83. The back of this card states that he was traded from the Flyers but I believe he was signed as a free agent.
Leach played all but two games for the Wings that year, scoring 15 goals and totaling 32 points. Good numbers for a guy on the edge of retirement but a far cry from his Philadelphia franchise record 61 goals in 1975-76.
Nine games into the 1982-83 season, the Red Wings visited the Spectrum to take on Reggie’s old club, his first time facing the Flyers since he was with the California Golden Seals in 1973-74. Detroit lost the game 7-4 but Leach scored the first goal of the game. At 3:05 of the first period, Reg popped a powerplay marker past Rick St. Croix with help from Stan Weir and Willie Huber. Not to be outdone by his old linemate, Bobby Clarke scored a few minutes later to even the score.
Between 1970-71 and 1982-83, the former third overall pick by the Boston Bruins appeared in 934 regular season and 94 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins, California Golden Seals, Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings. He was a Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 1975-76, despite his team being on the losing side of the final. It is an injustice that Leach is not in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
