He added an assist on a Darryl Sittler goal and even got in a fight with Bill Lochead for a Gordie Howe Hat Trick.
Not one to back down from the rough stuff, a week before, on October 22 at Maple Leaf Gardens, McDonald was assessed a total of 26 minutes in penalties in a 6-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. He was involved in a second period fight with Bobby Clarke and a third period fiasco with Andre Dupont that also involved Tiger Williams and Bob Kelly.

He remains Calgary’s single season record holder with 66 goals in 1982-83 and won a Stanley Cup with the team in 1988-89. McDonald was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
