Details

Lanny McDonald played two full seasons in the WCHL for the Medicine Hat Tigers, 1971-72 and 1972-73. He also appeared in six games with the Calgary Centennials in 1970-71. In 1971-72, he scored 50 goals and assisted on 64 for 114 points. That was good for just fourth on the high scoring Tigers with Tom Lysiak leading the way.

In 1972-73, McDonald upped his numbers to 62 goals and 77 assists for 139 points. He was fifth in the WCHL in goal scoring, third in assists and third in overall scoring, 15 points behind teammate and league leader Tom Lysiak.

The 1972-73 Tigers won the WCHL championship, beating the Saskatoon Blades in the final. Medicine Hat went on to the Memorial Cup tournament, facing off against the Toronto Marlboros and Quebec Remparts. The Tigers placed third.

His performance in junior caught the eye of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Lanny was taken fourth overall at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. The three players ahead of him were Denis Potvin, Tom Lysiak and Dennis Ververgaert. Of that draft class, just McDonald, Potvin, Bob Gainey, Rick Middleton and Dave Lewis went on to play at least 1,000 games in the National Hockey League.
