Details

To date, Tiger Williams has four of the six top single season penalty minute totals in Toronto Maple Leafs history. Dave held the franchise record with 351 PIM in 1977-78, a record that was topped by Tie Domi in 1997-98 (365).

Williams finished his NHL career with 3,971 penalty minutes and remains the all-time leader in the category. The closest competitor is Dale Hunter with 406 less. Tiger and Hunter are two of just nine players to spend more than 3,000 minutes in the box.

But, Tiger wasn’t just a fighter. Williams had offensive abilities, as well. He finished his career with 241 regular season goals, topping the 20 goal plateau four times. His career best came in 1980-81 with the Vancouver Canucks when he scored 35 while also sitting 343 PIM. Dave and Al Secord are the only two players in NHL history to reach both the 30 goal and 300 penalty minutes plateaus in a single season. Secord did it in 1981-82 with 44 goals and 303 PIM.

Originally a second round pick by the Maple Leafs at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft after a three year junior career with the Swift Current Broncos, Williams was also the third overall pick by the Cincinnati Stingers at the 1973 WHA Secret Amateur Draft. Between 1974-75 and 1987-88, Tiger played in 962 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Hartford Whalers.
