Card Notes

Andre is one of the roughest players in the NHL. Opponents have learned to keep their heads up when he is on the ice. Andre won’t score many goals, but he moves the puck well and he’s a handy guy to have around when the going gets tough. He assisted on the goal that won the Stanley Cup in the final playoff games against Boston.

Details

Andre Dupont was definitely rough and tough. Over his 810 regular season games in the NHL, he totaled 1,986 penalty minutes. His career high came in 1974-75 when he sat 276 PIM while appearing in all 80 games for the Flyers. This number placed him second in the league, behind just Dave Schultz and his NHL record 472 PIM.

When it came to the rough stuff in 1974-75 with the Broad Street Bullies, no game typified the team’s, and Dupont’s, style more than a matchup against the New York Islanders on November 5, 1974 at Nassau County Coliseum. Moose collected 31 penalty minutes, including a late first period fight with New York goalie Billy Smith. In a late game melee that included a fight between Bobby Clarke and Garry Howatt, Andre received a pair of game misconduct for his part. Battling Billy was also involved.

However, it wasn’t all fighting. Dupont assisted on his team’s first two goals of the game. He assisted on the first goal of the game, scored by Bill Barber. He then had a helper on a Rick MacLeish marker later in the first period. Both goals were scored on the powerplay and sandwiched an Ed Westfall goal for the Islanders, also with the man advantage.

In the deciding game six of the 1973-74 Stanley Cup final series between the Flyers and Boston Bruins, Andre’s third point of the series was indeed an assist on the game winning goal. He had the lone helper on a Rick MacLeish goal at 14:48 of the first period, scored on Gilles Gilbert while on the man advantage. It was the only goal scored in the game with Bernie Parent getting the 30 save shutout.

Originally a first round pick by the New York Rangers at the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft, Dupont played just seven games with that club. Between 1970-71 and 1982-83, Moose Dupont played 810 regular season and 140 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers and Quebec Nordiques. Along with his two Stanley Cup wins, he also helped the Omaha Knights to two CHL titles prior to moving to the NHL.
