Details
Despite the number of supposed unbreakable records Wayne Gretzky set in 1982-83, he would go on to break many of his own marks in the coming years. It’s odd to say that his 196 points in 82-83 were a bit of a slow down ahead of three consecutive seasons surpassing the 200 point plateau.
The hockey world saw a darker side of the Great One in that 82-83 NHL season. On December 22, 1982, his temper got the best of him and he dropped the gloves with Neal Broten from the Minnesota North Stars. Wayne received five for fighting and an extra two for roughing. He would also score one goal and assist on markers by Glenn Anderson and Mark Messier for a three point night and the Gordie Howe Hat Trick.
In 1983-84, Gretzky would up his goal scoring to 87 from 71 in the previous campaign, his second highest total behind the record 92 goals scored in 1981-82. He continued his dominance of both the Art Ross Trophy and Hart Trophy, awards that mostly belonged to him through the 1980’s.
Between 1979-80 and 1998-99, Wayne Gretzky played 1,487 regular season and 208 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999.
