Details

On the back of this 1982-83 O-Pee-Chee hockey card, there is no info snippet about Serge Savard. But, there is a trivia bit about the highest scoring centre in Winnipeg Jets history, up until that point in time. The Jets were just going into their fourth NHL season and the record obviously didn’t include numbers from their high scoring WHA days.

In 1983-84, Hawerchuk would reach a career high of 130 points. Teemu Selanne had 132 points in 1992-93 with the Jets but was a right winger.

Savard came to Winnipeg prior to the 1981-82 NHL season after a stellar career with the Montreal Canadiens. With the Habs, he was an eight time Stanley Cup champion and was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 1968-69.

With the Jets, Serge played just 47 games in his first season but appeared in 76 of 80 in his final campaign, 1982-83. On January 10, 1982, he played his first game against the Habs. In a 4-4 tie at the Winnipeg Arena, Serge scored his first goal of the season at 6:20 of the second period on Rick Wamsley, assisted by Willy Lindstrom and Bengt Lundholm. The goal put Winnipeg up 3-1. In the first frame, he assisted on Dale Hawerchuk’s 25th of the campaign.

Between 1966-67 and 1982-83, Serge Savard played 1,040 regular season and 130 playoff games in the National Hockey League. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986 and had his jersey number 18 retired by the Canadiens in 2006.
