Details

It’s true, just Clark Gillies and Billy Harris played all 80 regular season games for the New York Islanders in 1974-75. Denis Potvin came close, missing just a single match. It marked the first of just four times Clark would have perfect attendance over his NHL career.

After an outstanding junior career with the Regina Pats in the WHL, the Islanders selected Gillies fourth overall at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft. Drafted ahead of him were Greg Joly, Wilf Paiement and Rick Hampton. Of the 18 players selected in the first round, Clark went on to lead the way with 958 regular season games played in the NHL. He is the only one of the 18 to become a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Clark showcased his rough and tumble style of hockey on January 9, 1975 in a road game against the Philadelphia Flyers at the Spectrum. In a 3-1 win, Gillies scored the game winning goal in the second period, assisted by Billy Harris. He then assisted on the third goal, scored by Jude Drouin. Completing the Gordie Howe Hat Trick, the rookie dropped his gloves with the “champ”, taking on Dave Schultz in the second.

Between 1974-75 and 1987-88, Clark Gillies appeared in 958 regular season and 164 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Islanders and Buffalo Sabres. The two time First Team All-Star helped the Islanders to four Stanley Cup championships and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.
