Details

1978-79 saw Rick MacLeish’s numbers drop to the lowest of his NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers, outside of his injury shortened 1975-76 campaign. However, he would bounce back, topping the 30 goal plateau over the next two seasons.

Always up for a game against the team that drafted him fourth overall at the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft, Rick and the Flyers took it to the Boston Bruins on December 9, 1978 at the Spectrum. After the first period, Rick had a pair of goals on Gilles Gilbert and Philadelphia was up 4-0.

MacLeish scored the hat trick goal at 7:02 of the third, shorthanded while Jimmy Watson was in the box. Gerry Cheevers had just replaced Gilbert in the Boston goal. Rick also assisted on a Blake Dunlop goal with 13 seconds left in the game. It was the ninth of the match for the Flyers in a 9-2 win. Bill Barber also had a four point game while Bobby Clarke and Dunlop contributed three points each.

Between 1970-71 and 1983-84, Rick MacLeish played 846 regular season and 114 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Philadelphia Flyers, Hartford Whalers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings. He was the first player in Flyers history to score 50 goals in a season and he helped the club to two Stanley Cup championships.
