Details

Rick MacLeish is certainly no longer the youngest player in NHL history to score 50 goals in a season. However, he will always have the distinction of being just the seventh different player to accomplish the feat. MacLeish and Mickey Redmond both joined the 50 goal club in 1972-73.

His seven point game, a Flyers record at the time, came on March 4, 1973 in a home game at the Spectrum against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In a 10-0 blowout, Rick scored four and added assists on goals by Bobby Clarke, Gary Dornhoefer and Ross Lonsberry. Three goals were scored on Ron Low while the fourth was on Gord McRae.

Since, that team record has been broken by Tom Bladon and his historic eight point game during the 1977-78 season. Eric Lindros also had a seven point night for the Flyers on February 26, 1997 with a goals and six assists against the Ottawa Senators.

It was MacLeish’s only time reaching the 50 goal plateau but he did come close in 1976-77 with 49. 1972-73 marked a string of nine consecutive seasons scoring at least 22 goals. He surpassed the 30 goal mark seven times over his NHL career and finished with 349 regular season goals.

Between 1970-71 and 1983-84, Rick MacLeish appeared in 846 regular season and 114 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Flyers, Hartford Whalers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings. He helped the Flyers to consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 1973-74 and 1974-75.
