Details

Phil Russell would make it 66 games into the 1978-79 NHL season before the Chicago Blackhawks shipped him to the Atlanta Flames with Ivan Boldirev and Darcy Rota for Greg Fox, Tom Lysiak, Harold Phillipoff, Pat Ribble and Miles Zaharko. He finished out the season playing 13 regular season and two playoff games with the Flames. He would remain with the club over the following four seasons.

A week before that trade, Russell had a rare offensive outburst in an 8-5 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. At the Forum in L.A. on March 3, 1979, Phil racked up three points on a goal and two assists. The goal, his eighth of the season, was scored with 35 seconds left in the game on Mario Lessard, assisted by Mike Walton and J.P. Bordeleau. He also had helpers on goals by Reg Kerr and Alain Daigle.

With Atlanta that year, Russell scored just a single goal, the final marker of the game in an 8-2 win over the St. Louis Blues at the Omni. Phil was an assist short of the Gordie Howe Hat Trick, engaging in a scrap with Brian Sutter in the second period. On the other side of that fight, Sutter had an assist but no goals.

Between 1972-73 and 1986-87, Phil Russell played 1,016 regular season and 73 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta Flames, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres. Originally a first round pick by the Blackhawks at the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft out of the Edmonton Oil Kings, Russell was a candidate for the Calder Trophy in 1972-73 and the Norris Trophy in 1978-79.
