Card Notes

Chicago’s candidate for rookie of the year last season. Phil was very impressive for the Hawks, as the team advanced to the Stanley Cup finals. He’s cool under pressure and is learning not to take needless penalties. A good skater and a good puck handler, he should be a fine addition to the Hawks’ defensive corps for several years to come.

Details

Phil Russell was a first round pick, 13th overall, by the Chicago Blackhawks at the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft, selected from the Edmonton Oil Kings. He moved right into a full-time role with the Hawks without a game in the minors.

Russell was a candidate for the Calder Trophy in 1972-73. He placed tied for sixth with Gregg Sheppard in what was one of the tightest races. Steve Vickers won the award but with just less than 25% of the votes. Also in the running were Bill Barber, Billy Harris, Jim Schoenfeld and Dan Bouchard.

A career 99 goal scorer over 1,016 regular season games, three of those came in consecutive games in his rookie campaign. Russell scored his first NHL goal in his 19th game, the lone marker in a 5-1 home loss to the Minnesota North Stars. The goal was scored on Gilles Gilbert, assisted by Lou Angotti and Jim Pappin. He then scored in the following two games, a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks and a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

He was part of the blockbuster March 13, 1979 trade that sent him, along with Ivan Boldirev and Darcy Rota to the Atlanta Flames for Greg Fox, Tom Lysiak, Harold Phillipoff, Pat Ribble and Miles Zaharko.

Between 1972-73 and 1986-87, Phil Russell played in 1,016 regular season and 73 playoff games in the National Hockey League. Along with the Blackhawks and Flames (both Atlanta and Calgary), he also played for the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres.
