Card Notes

Marc was Canadiens’ second choice in the 1969 amateur draft who, along with Rejean Houle, formed the potent one-two punch which led Montreal Junior Canadiens to the Memorial Cup in 1968-69. A strong winger who is not afraid to dig in the corner, and is right at home in rough going.

Details

That 1968-69 Montreal Junior Canadiens not only featured Marc Tardif and Rejean Houle, but also future stars Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin, Guy Charron and Bobby Lalonde, among several others that went on to the NHL. The team finished first in the OHA Junior A with Houle capturing the Eddie Powers Trophy as the league’s top scorer. Montreal swept the Regina Pats 4-0 to capture the Memorial Cup title.

A weird little ERROR common to the 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee set, this hockey card states that Tardif was not in the NHL in 1969-70. However, he played 18 games for the Montreal Canadiens that year. Most of his first pro season was spent in the AHL with the Montreal Voyageurs. He had 58 points over just 45 games with that team.

He was a full-time NHLer by 1970-71, appearing in all but two regular season games for the Habs and all 20 in the post season with the Habs capturing the Stanley Cup championship. For Tardif, it was his first of two Stanley Cup titles over his career.

Between 1969-70 and 1982-83, Marc Tardif played 517 regular season and 62 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens and Quebec Nordiques. From 1973-74 to 1978-79, he played 446 regular season and 44 playoff games in the WHA with the Los Angeles Sharks, Michigan Stags/Baltimore Blades and the Nordiques. He is the WHA’s all-time goal scoring leader.
