Card Notes

Appears to have overcome same supposed disadvantage of so many NHL stars – too small. That was what he heard when Canucks claimed him on their second choice in 1971 Amateur Draft. A torn knee cartilage curtailed his NHL activity in his rookie season.

Details

At 5’5″, Bobby Lalonde was the NHL’s shortest until Nathan Gerbe came along. The Vancouver Canucks selected him in the second round of the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft, 17th overall. He was the team’s second pick behind Jocelyn Guevremont. The two were teammates in junior for the 1970-71 season with the Montreal Junior Canadiens.

In that final year of junior, Lalonde scored 59 goals and assisted on 68 for 127 points while playing just 61 games alongside Rick Martin. His point total placed him third in the race for the Eddie Powers Trophy, 16 points behind Marcel Dionne of the St. Catharines Black Hawks.

1972-73 saw Bobby bounce back from his knee problems to appear in 77 games for the Canucks. He was fourth on the team in scoring with 47 points on 20 goals and 27 assists. Unfortunately, the injury bug would return the following season and he played just 36 games for the Canucks in 1973-74.

Three of his 20 goals in 1972-73 came on the night of March 17, 1973 in a game at the Pacific Coliseum against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Canucks won easily 6-1 with Lalonde getting the hat trick, game winning goal and adding an assist for a four point night.

Between 1971-72 and 1981-82, Bobby Lalonde appeared in 641 regular season and 16 playoff games with the Canucks, Atlanta Flames and Boston Bruins. He returned to the Calgary Flames for a single game in 1981-82.
