Details
After just a single full season of Major Junior hockey with his hometown Peterborough Petes in 1972-73, the Montreal Canadiens selected Bob Gainey eighth overall at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. Of the 1973 draft class, Gainey ended up with the most career NHL games at 1,160. Fellow first rounders Denis Potvin, Lanny McDonald and Rick Middleton also reached the 1,000 game plateau.
The five time Stanley Cup champion played in the National Hockey League from 1973-74 to 1988-89, all with the Habs. Gainey was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy in the first four years of its existence. Bob was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2008, his jersey number 23 was retired by the Montreal Canadiens.
