Johnny is a Bruins’ veteran, starting his 15th season with Boston. He is the sole survivor of the famous “Uke” line of Boston – has been the Bruins “spark-plug” ever since coming to Boston from Detroit.

The Uke Line was put together in Johnny Bucyk’s first year with the Boston Bruins. He joined Bronco Horvath and Vic Stasiuk with the name coming from the trio’s shared Ukrainian heritage. Horvath left for the Chicago Blackhawks after the 1960-61 NHL season while Stasiuk was traded to Detroit midway through 60-61.
After playing parts of two seasons with the Red Wings, Bucyk was traded to the Bruins on June 10, 1957 for Terry Sawchuk. He remained with Boston for the rest of his lengthy NHL career. John scored his first of 556 career goals in the NHL with the Red Wings on December 11, 1955 against the New York Rangers. Scoring at 13:20 of the second on Gump Worsley, assisted by Alex Delvecchio, his only goal of the 1955-56 season was the game winner.
1970-71 was a big year for John. Him and teammate Phil Esposito became just the fourth and fifth players in NHL history to score 50 or more in a season. Bucyk finished the year with 51 goals, scoring number 50 in a March 16, 1971 game against the Red Wings at Detroit Olympia. The goal was scored on Roy Edwards, assisted by Fred Stanfield and Ted Green. After that match, Bucyk scored just a single goal over the final nine games of the year.
Between 1955-56 and 1977-78, John Bucyk played 1,540 regular season and 124 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings and Bruins. His jersey number 9 was retired by Boston in 1980 and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
