Details
Fred Stanfield’s older brother John Stanfield (Jack) played a single playoff game in the National Hockey League, with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1965-66. The career minor-leaguer did see major league action in the WHA, playing 112 regular season and 16 playoff games with the Houston Aeros in 1972-73 and 1973-74.
Younger brother Jim Stanfield played seven games in the NHL between 1969-70 and 1971-72, all with the Los Angeles Kings. Jim had a lengthy career in the minors, playing on teams in the CHL, AHL, WHL, WIHL and NAHL.
In 1965-66, Stanfield split time between the Blackhawks and the CPHL’s St. Louis Braves. In 39 regular season games with Chicago, he managed just two goals and two assists. He would play his final ten games with the club in 1966-67 before moving on to the Boston Bruins. His time in Chicago started out promising, finishing fifth in voting for the Calder Trophy in 1964-65, a great distance behind winner Roger Crozier.
On May 15, 1967, Fred was traded from the Blackhawks to the Boston Bruins with Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge for Gilles Marotte, Pit Martin and Jack Norris. In the six years Stanfield was with Boston, he scored at least 20 goals in each and helped the Bruins to a pair of Stanley Cup championships.
Between 1964-65 and 1977-78, Fred Stanfield played 914 regular season and 106 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Minnesota North Stars and Buffalo Sabres. In 1972-73, he finished seventh in the NHL with a career high 58 assists, one behind sixth place Rod Gilbert and 17 behind leader and teammate Phil Esposito.
