In Detroit’s fourth game of the 1958-59 NHL season, Alex Delvecchio scored all the team’s three goals in a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Of course, all three goals were assisted by Gordie Howe. He also had a big night in late December with a goal and three assists in a 5-3 win over the Boston Bruins. The goal was a short-handed marker, the second shortie of the game by the Red Wings.
It wasn’t just Alex that tailed off toward the end of the 1958-59 NHL season. The Red Wings finished dead last in the league, six points behind fifth place New York. They would bounce back in 1959-60 with a fourth place finish and would be in the Stanley Cup final in 1960-61.
With just three minor penalties during the 1958-59 season, Delvecchio was awarded his first of three Lady Byng Trophies. He would win again in 1965-66 and 1968-69. Over his 1,550 career regular season games, Alex sat a very modest 383 PIM.
Between 1950-51 and 1973-74, Alex Delvecchio appeared in 1,550 regular season and 121 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with Detroit. He helped the Red Wings to three Stanley Cup championships early in his career. Alex was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
