Details

J.P. Parise came to the New York Islanders via a January 5, 1975 trade with the Minnesota North Stars for Ernie Hicke and Doug Rombough. Later in that 1974-75 NHL season, Parise, along with Jude Drouin who also came from the North Stars, helped the Islanders reach the post season for the first time in franchise history.

Jean-Paul joined Minnesota in their inaugural 1967-68 season but was not drafted by the club at the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. In 1966-67, he saw some NHL action with the Boston Bruins but spent much of the season in the CHL with the Oklahoma City Blazers, helping the club to their second consecutive championship.

It was actually the Oakland Seals that selected J.P., their 11th pick and 65th overall. Before the season began, he was then traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs organization (Rochester Americans) with Bryan Hextall for Gerry Ehman. He played a single game with the Leafs before being traded to Minnesota on December 23, 1967 with Milan Marcetta for Murray Hall, Don Johns, Len Lunde, Ted Taylor and George “Duke” Harris.

With the Islanders, Parise put up the last two of his five 20+ goal seasons. His PK skills shone through in a November 29, 1975 home game against the St. Louis Blues. J.P. had a three point game on two goals and an assist. His first goal of the game served as the game winner in the 8-2 Islanders win. His second was scored shorthanded with Billy MacMillan in the box, assisted by one of the greatest penalty killers, Ed Westfall.

Between 1965-66 and 1978-79, J.P. Parise played 890 regular season and 86 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Minnesota North Stars, New York Islanders and Cleveland Barons. He played six of eight games for Canada at the 1972 Summit Series and spent time as an assistant coach with the North Stars after retiring.
