Details
When Ed Westfall was the fifth player picked by the New York Islanders at the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft, he instantly became the first team captain in franchise history. He carried on that role until the end of the 1976-77 NHL season before Clark Gillies took over the “C”. He had previously worn an “A” with the Boston Bruins.
1975-76 turned out to be the last great year offensively for Westfall. He tied his career best 25 goals, a number he had previously put up with the Bruins in 1970-71. It was also the second of two times he appeared in all of his team’s regular season games.
That year, Westfall put up two four-point games within three days of each other. On November 26, 1975, he had four assists in a 9-1 win over the Minnesota North Stars. He had helpers on goals by Clark Gillies, Jean Potvin, Jude Drouin and J.P. Parise. In signature Eddie Westfall fashion, the Parise goal was scored shorthanded.
On November 29, he had a goal and three assists in an 8-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. Again, one of the helpers was on a Parise shortie. Over 14 games in that month of November, Ed was hot, scoring nine and assisting on 13 for 22 points. Three of the nine goals were scored on the penalty kill.
Between 1961-62 and 1978-79, Ed Westfall played 1,226 regular season and 95 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders. He was a member of two Stanley Cup champions with Boston but retired a year before the Islanders Cup Dynasty.
