Details

Ed Westfall appeared in just 55 regular season games in 1978-79, his final season in the National Hockey League. He put in just five goals but one was in true Eddie Westfall style. Ed scored his final shorthanded goal on November 4, 1978 in a home game against the Washington Capitals. At 1:04 of the second, Westfall beat Caps goalie Bernie Wolfe, assisted by Billy Harris, while Bert Marshall was in the box for interference. It also turned out to be the game winning goal in a 4-1 Islanders win.

Westfall’s final NHL goal was scored in the 1979 playoffs in game 4 of the opening round against the Chicago Blackhawks. Eddie scored at 1:24 of the second on Tony Esposito with help from Wayne Merrick and Stefan Persson. The marker was the game winner in the 4-1 New York victory and the series clincher in a 4-0 Islanders sweep.

Between 1961-62 and 1978-79, Ed Westfall played 1,226 regular season and 95 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders. An original Islander, he was the fifth player selected by New York at the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft. He served as the franchise’s first team captain.
