Details

Ed Westfall didn’t have much trouble adjusting from playing with the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in 1971-72 and switching to the expansion New York Islanders for the 1972-73 NHL season. Westfall served as the team’s first captain and held that role until the end of the 1976-77 campaign when Clark Gillies took over.

Westfall actually produced two more points than the year before despite playing ten less games. He had three 3-point games, two against the Vancouver Canucks and one against the Chicago Blackhawks. In the franchise’s first game, Ed scored the team’s first ever goal in a 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Flames.

He would end his NHL career with the Islanders after the 1978-79 season, just missing out on the team’s four year run as Stanley Cup champions. He did win two Cups with the Bruins in 1969-70 and 1971-72.

Between 1961-62 and 1978-79, Ed Westfall played 1,226 regular season and 95 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins and Islanders. The ninth overall pick by the Islanders at the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft, Westfall was awarded the Bill Masterton Trophy in 1976-77.
