Eddie is the captain and leader of the youthful Islanders, the most experienced player on the team with some 800 gams played in the NHL. He is a top defensive forward and a fine penalty killer. He can also play defense if needed.

In 1973-74, the New York Islanders improved by 26 points over their inaugural 1972-73 NHL season. Ed Westfall went from a -42 to a -5 and would never be below zero after that for the rest of his career. He topped out with a +57 playing for the Boston Bruins in 1970-71.

Uncharacteristically, in 1973-74 Westfall had no shorthanded or game winning goals. However, he did still score 19 goals for the Islanders while missing ten games. In a 4-2 road win over the Los Angeles Kings on January 31, 1974, Westfall was in on all New York’s goals. He scored his ninth of the season in the second period before assisting on all of Bob Nystrom’s hat trick goals.

Nystrom scored three consecutive in the third period to bring the Islanders out of a 2-1 deficit for the win. Rogie Vachon was in net for the Kings and allowed the four New York goals on just 16 shot. Billy Smith was exceptional for the Islanders, stopping 35 of 37 against his former club.

Between 1961-62 and 1978-79, Ed Westfall played 1,226 regular season and 95 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders. He was a two time Stanley Cup champion with Boston and has been inducted into both the New York Hockey Hall of Fame and the New York Islanders Hall of Fame.
