Card Notes

A young player, whom Leafs have great hopes for, Darryl was their first-round choice in the 1970 Amateur Draft and he made the jump from Junior A to the NHL. Missed a third of his first pro season because of a broken wrist but was able to come back and regain a regular berth.

Details

1972-73 was a breakout year for Darryl Sittler. With 29 goals and 48 assists for 77 points, he more than doubled his offensive production from the year before. Of course, he would go on to a Hockey Hall of Fame career with Toronto, the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings.

In the French section, it mentions that Sittler scored eight goals in the first 18 games of the 1972-73 NHL season. Those eight goals actually came in the first 14 before an eight game scoring drought. However, he was still productive over those eight with eleven assists.

Included in those eleven helpers was a five assist game against the California Golden Seals on November 25, 1972 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Toronto won quite easily 11-0 with Darryl assisting on all three goals of a Rick Kehoe hat trick and two goals by Denis Dupere. The trio combined for 14 points in the match. Jacques Plante and Ron Low shared the shutout.

Sittler was the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. He was picked from the London Knights where he played from 1967-68 to 1969-70. Gilbert Perreault went first in the draft that year, taken by the expansion Buffalo Sabres. Others drafted in front of Sittler include: Dale Tallon, Reggie Leach, Rick MacLeish, Ray Martyniuk, Chuck Lefley and Greg Polis.
