Details

The back of this 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee hockey card makes the connection between Rick Kehoe and Darryl Sittler in junior hockey with the London Knights. However, the connection just wasn’t that strong. Kehoe played just 23 games with the Knights in 1969-70, his rookie season, scoring three goals. Midseason, he was shipped to the Hamilton Red Wings where he spent the rest of his two year major junior career.

At the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Kehoe in the second round, 22nd overall. Toronto did not have a first round pick in that draft. His second year of junior with Hamilton certainly earned Rick the nod. He scored 39 and assisted on 41 over 58 games to lead the team with 80 points.

In 1972-73, Rick had outstanding numbers with the Buds, scoring 33 goals and assisting on 42 for 75 points, two points behind Darryl Sittler for the team lead. However, he would have just one more year with the Maple Leafs. On September 13, 1974, Kehoe was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Blaine Stoughton.

Between 1971-72 and 1984-85, Rick Kehoe played 906 regular season and 39 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs and Penguins. He was the Lady Byng Trophy winner in 1980-81. That year, he sat just three minor penalties while scored 55 goals. That goal total placed him tied for fourth in the league with Wayne Gretzky, 13 behind leader Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders.
